GETTING AROUND
Explorer Pass
Grants entry to 78 paid properties, including Edinburgh Castle, Tantallon Castle, Dirleton Castle, St. Andrews Castle and Cathedral, and Inchcolm Abbey. A three-day pass starts at about $45.

Transportation
Edinburgh’s vast bus system can get you anywhere in the city. Single trip £1.60, day pass £4.00, night pass £3.00 — but make sure to have exact change.
For trips outside the city, use the rail system. Purchase tickets online, through the ScotRail app or at a station kiosk.
ROYAL MILE
Camera Obscura and World of Illusions
The Camera Obscura on the rooftop has entertained for more than 150 years and uses mirrors to show a live view of the city below.
Palace of Holyroodhouse
The queen’s official residence in Scotland has a great view of Arthur’s Seat.

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
See performers from all over the world along with the massed pipes and drums, military bands, and the lone piper.
Festivals
There are so many festivals in the month of August, that there is a site dedicated to it. Some events are free, but individual shows will charge.
